CFS pathogens using Nitric Oxide to help evade the immune system

High Nitric Oxide (NO) is a marker and a problem for those suffering with CFS type illness. Symptoms attributed to elevated NO are Fatigue, Immune dysfunction, Learning and Memory issues, Orthostatic intolerance (blood pressure when standing vs. laying down), Pain, Depression and last but not least Panic Disorder.

More recently pathogens are highly suspect as a causative agent in CFS (Research Lyme or CPN). A link between pathogenic bacteria and high NO has been found by scientists:

Antibiotic resistance clue found
US scientists have uncovered a defence mechanism in bacteria that allows them to fend off the threat of antibiotics.

The bacteria actually produce nitric oxide which helps keep them safe from a wide range of antibiotics and that nitric oxide synthase (the enzyme responsible for the production of NO) was activated specifically in response to the presence of antibiotics.

Scientists are thinking that downregulating nitric oxide synthase should help greatly in eliminating antibiotic resistant bacteria.
